What’s the Joke?
Yeah! Sounds like fun in Japan, I know, when we see the Joke Ninja bit. But the comedian is no doubt like the warrior of old, on a mission to win in battle. There is much more to being funny, than just the way you look or walk, although Charlie the original silent movies man said it all without words.
A joke needn’t be something to put someone down, and indeed good humor should in my opinion lift you up and lighten the burdens of an otherwise serious world.
First there is the content, and that will differ to suit the occasion, the location and purpose, all in context. Always remember the audience, and do be careful to be in place. Not everyone will appreciate the funny side when they are grieving the loss of a loved one for example.
Most good jokes start with a story and end with a good punch line. Perhaps the most unexpected or ridiculous follow on catching the listener of guard. Do not forget the timing! It all fits together to entertain and cheer.
