Hindi and Famous Hindi Poetries in India

India is a country known for its love for its tradition and family oriented individuals. Because of this, poetry that speaks of love, passion and religion make up the lives of many Indians.

Hindi, the official language in India together with English is the most widely used language in the whole country. Although there are other languages, most of the people in the urban area use Hindi.

The ocean of Hindi music is very vast and one can find many musical genre’s such as Geet (Hindi Songs), Ghazal, Bhajan, Qawwali, and other forms. Among all of these – Geet and Ghazal were listened by the most number of people. Often I heard Hindi music lovers asking, ‘What is the difference between a Geet and a Ghazal? And here in this article, they will find some important differences. So let’s start.

Ghazal is strictly based on a defined poetic meter from beginning to the end, where as Geet is based on a tune which can have different meter in a single song.

Most of the Ghazals lack the musical attachment and only few of them are composed musically. Also, Ghazals follow strictly the Radeef/Qafiya and other conventional rules – where as Geet writing is not required to follow those rules and can be independently written to incorporate it into a musical tune.

A particular Ghazal can bring several different thoughts in all of its couplets but in Geet it’s not possible. A Geet cannot become sad when it started on a romantic note and vice versa, the theme and subject is strictly followed till the end of the Geet. However, there are some exceptions in which the subject matter of a Geet has different shades.

Some of the eminent poets who have taken the Punjabi poetry to new horizons are Amrita Pritam, Mohan Singh, Pritam Singh Safeer, Bawa Balwant and Santokh Singh Dhir. Additionally, some of the eminent poets of modern era are Shameel, Harcharan Singh Gill, Parminder Musafir, Shiv Kumar Batalvi and Sukhwinder Amrit. All of these have contributed to the development of Punjabi poetry books in their own ways.

Punjabi poetry started blossoming right from the British Raj in India, which focused on Indian freedom movement and nationalism. The credit of adding diversity into Punjabi poetry books goes to Mohan Singh, Chatrik and Puran Sigh, whose poetry added a flavor of modernism, romance and Sensuality. Modern Punjabi poetry books clearly reflect the far long journey by the poets.

There are few Ghazal singers and abundance of Geet singers. When it comes to Ghazals, names like Jagjit Singh, Mehdi Hassan, & Pankaj Udhaas will instantly comes to mind and for Geet names like Mohd Rafi,Kishore Kumar Lata Mangeshkar,& Asha Bhosle comes to mind.

Geet is a type of a poem and its each verse revolves around the central idea of the poem and it’s logically developed and written where as a Ghazal can have many shades and matters. Ghazal, which means ‘talking to women’ in Arabic, is a form of poetry in admiration of a woman.

Excerpt: Part of on The ghazal (Arabic/Pashto/ Persian/Urdu: ; Hindi: ; Punjabi: ; Turkish: ) is a poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets and a refrain, with each line sharing the same meter. A ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain. The form is ancient, originating in 6th century pre-Islamic Arabic verse. It is derived from the Arabian panegyric qasida. The structural requirements of the ghazal are similar in stringency to those of the Petrarchan sonnet. In its style and content it is a genre which has proved capable of an extraordinary variety of expression around its central themes of love and separation. It is one of the principal poetic forms which the Indo-Perso-Arabic civilization offered to the eastern Islamic world. The ghazal spread into South Asia in the 12th century under the influence of the new Islamic Sultanate courts and Sufi mystics. Although the ghazal is most prominently a form of Persian and Urdu poetry, today it is found in the poetry of many languages. Ghazals were written by the Persian mystics and poets Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi (13th century) and Hafez (14th century), the Azeri poet Fuzuli (16th century), as well as Mirza Ghalib (17971869) and Muhammad Iqbal (18771938), both of whom wrote ghazals in Persian and Urdu. Through the influence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (17491832), the ghazal became very po… More:
