A Brief Introduction to Yo Mama Jokes
The “yo mama joke” has quickly become a significant part of the popular culture in North America. Originating in the early nineteen-nineties (primarily in urban american neighbourhoods), this variety of comedic insult was used in head-to-head competitions between individuals to determine who was the better trash-talker (“The dozens” was a common name for such a competition). Although yo mama jokes were used by urban artists through hip hop songs and movies, they officially made their way to the mainstream audience with the introduction of the the “Yo Momma” television series on MTV (hosted by Wilmer Valderamma of “That 70’s Show” fame).
A typical yo momma joke focuses on elements of a person’s physical appearance, personality or social status. Obesity, old age, poverty, poor hygiene, unattractiveness and lack of intelligence are among the most common themes. Here are some examples:
“Yo mama is so fat that when she was diagnosed with a flesh-eating disease, the doctor gave her ten years to live.”
“Yo mama is so old that her social security number is 1.”
“Yo mama is so stupid that she bought a videocamera to record cable tv shows at home.”
“Yo mama is so poor that she can’t even put her two cents in this conversation.”
An alternate spin on yo mama jokes is to centre them around a popular movie or social personality. For example, fans of the Harry Potter book series may come up with a joke such as this:
“Yo mama is so fat that a wingardium leviosa spell couldn’t lift her.”
The list goes on and on, and is limited only by one’s creativity.
Often spectators will watch 2 individuals in a yo mama battle and determine a winner based upon the hilarity of the jokes delivered by the contestants. If you see a crowd forming in an inner-city neighbourhood, there’s a chance that a yo mama battle may be ensuing in the midst of it. Join the spectators and take in an entertaining clash of intellects with a modern-day twist!
